Sewer Boyz

Sewer Boyz (No relation to Sewer Mutant!) is a bootleg TMNT comic featuring a bunch of different artists doing their take on the Turtles orchestrated by Erwin Papa.

The book tells a brief story about the Turtles taking on the Shredder. Some pages are drawn by two or more? artists, showing wildly different (usually silly!) takes on the story. Plus there’s tons of pin-ups.

Two pages are by Bill McEvoy of Homegrown Studios, who I know from the Amateur Creators Union days. Bill was also kind enough to do me a sketch:

This is well worth it, especially if you’re into both the Turtles and any of the contributors. Avoid if you’re seeking a “real” Turtles story.

Soaked in Blood # 3

Soaked in Blood # 3. Speaking of the ACU, this zine from JK Paperz always reminded me of the freewheeling spirit and lo-fi approach of that organization. So it’s appropriate that an old friend from that era, Allen Robinson, is in the latest issue.

The work in these zines is really raw and unpolished. I enjoy them — I’ve bought all three so far and I have JK’s new Max Murder on order as well — but they’re not for everyone.

A woman named Tori roller skates down the street. A gang of four men await her around the corner.

Fourth Dimensional Volume 1: Summer of Fun

Cover of Fourth Dimensional Volume 1: Summer of Fun

Fourth Dimensional: Summer of Fun Hey, a comic in color! This is a fun and silly sci-fi comic by Seraji. I soon as I saw Seraji’s art on Instagram, I knew I had to have his book. It’s a lighthearted story about Mon, a being who escaped from a prison in the Fourth Dimension, and Ava, a young woman who takes Mon in. The early stories are mostly slice of life bits as Mon learns about our world, but as more Fourth Dimensional beings arrive the plot develops a bit more.

My favorite story is the one where Mon and Ava’s brother Sam try to cook dinner for Ava:

Panel 1: Sam stands over a table of ingredients, with Mon in the background. Sam says: “Something is still missing.” Panel 2: Same as panel 1, but Sam and Mon are now wearing chef hats and aprons. Sam says: “It’s perfect.”

Sam and Mon chop vegetables and prep food. Sam says: “Don’t worry, a little onion powder will save the potatoes.”

I love the art in this and enjoyed the breath of fresh air this provided. I just ordered the next issue.
